This quarterfinal figures to be more difficult for CCHS than the past two years

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER Central Catholic has generally been on the long and winding road this particular Week 14 Friday night the past three years. There were back-to-back trips to Shamokin in 2009 and 2010 and then there was the trip to Mount Carmel last year. The last two years, frankly, just getting to the games proved more difficult than the games themselves. CCHS crushed Clearfield 55-20 at Shamokin in 2010 and smashed Shamokin 56-14 at Mt. Carmel last year, District 4's reps, frankly, couldn't have won more than three games in the Lehigh Valley Conference the past two years. My sense is that tonight's game in Bethlehem will be much more difficult. This Selinsgrove team isn't nearly as good as the 2009 version that beat CCHS and went on to finish a 16-0 season with a state title. But this is a well-coached Seals team from a traditional program that has played a much more difficult schedule than other District 4 champs. Selinsgrove should provide a much more challenging game than what the last two state quarterfinals have been. Central Catholic has talked about playing football in December again. December arrives at midnight tonight, and I guess about 12 overtime sessions at BASD could get CCHS and Selinsgrove into December tonight. But these Vikings want to start a game in December and that means they need to win tonight to make it happen. Riding a much improved defense and Colin McDermott, I think it happens. I predict a 31-14 CCHS win. My record, by the way, is 195-58 after going 3-1 on both Thanksgiving and last Saturday. Here's the complete preview capsule for tonight's Selinsgrove-Central Catholic game. An abbreviated version of this capsule ran in today's print editions. Colleague Stephen Miller compiled most of it. PIAA 3A QUARTERFINAL Who: District 4 champion Selinsgrove (10-3) vs. District 11 champion Central Catholic (8-5) When: 7 p.m. Friday, Bethlehem Area School District Stadium At stake: A berth in the PIAA 3A semifinals against District 12 champion Archbishop Wood (10-2) or District 1 champion Interboro (11-2) SELINSGROVE •Coach: Dave Hess (fifth season, 47-19) •Key players: So. QB Isaiah Rapp (52-110, 575 yards, 6 TDs, 4 INTs); Fr. RB-DB Juvon Batts (153 carries, 898 yards, 9 TDs); So. RB-DB Zach Adams (153 carries, 675 yards, 4 TDs); Sr. RB-LB Mike Walter (121 carries, 549 yards, 13 TDs); Sr. WR-DB Walter Jacobs (16 catches, 178 yards, 1 TD); Sr. S Tyler Krebs (93 tackles); Jr. RB-LB Conner Liesenfeld (90 tackles); Jr. WR-DB Mason Pope (5 INTs); Sr. DT Harley Stahl (four sacks). •About the Seals: Reached the state quarterfinals with a 41-14 win over University Prep. … Average 24.7 points per game and allow 13.1. … Posted back-to-back shutouts against Shamokin and Milton to win the District 4 title, scoring 72 points in those wins. … Their losses came to Berwick, Southern Columbia, and Danville. … Defense has posted five shutouts. … Have held 11 of their 13 opponents to 21 or fewer points. Southern Columbia is the only team that scored more than 24 points against them. … Batts ran for 217 yards in the District 4 final. … Their district title was their first since 2009, a season in which they beat Central Catholic in the state quarterfinals en route to the PIAA 3A title. … Have won 12 District 4 titles since 1998. … Went 1-9 last season. … Picked off seven passes and ran for 320 yards in their first-round state win over University Prep. CENTRAL CATHOLIC •Coach: John Cupples (first season, 8-5). •Key players: Sr. RB Colin McDermott (398 carries, 2,742 yards, 35 TDs); Sr. LB Anthony Lynch (65 tackles, 3 sacks); Sr. OL-DL Oscar Ghasab; Sr. OL-LB Rocky Mason (30 tackles); Sr. DL-TE Jeff Gulyas (51 tackles, 11 sacks, 16 TFL; 11 catches, 208 yards, 2 TDs); Sr. QB Anthony Beck (79-159, 1,022 yards, 9 TDs, 4 INTs); Sr. WR-DB Sean O'Donnell (7 catches, 132 yards, 3 TDs); Sr. RB-LB Kevin Kern (59 carries, 269 yards, 1 TD; 36 tackles); Jr. WR-DB Ryan Beville (37 catches, 523 yards, 4 TDs; 35 tackles, 3 INTs); Jr. C Angelo Lucci; So. WR-DB Paul Leaser (38 tackles, 2 INTs); Sr. WR-DB Timothy Gottshall (22 tackles, 6 sacks, 11 TFL); So. LB Jack Nosovitch (19 tackles, 2 sacks, 5 TFL). •About the Vikings: Advanced to the quarterfinals with a 23-0 win over District 2 champion Abington Heights. … Making their fourth straight appearance in the PIAA 3A quarterfinals. … Average 26.5 points per game and allow 19.2. … McDermott has run for at least 200 yards in four of their last five games. … Have allowed just 13 points during a four-game winning streak that started after a 47-17 loss to District 11 4A champion Parkland. … Are 7-2 in their last nine games, with the losses coming to Whitehall and Parkland. … Have allowed 21 or fewer points in all of their wins this season. … Kicker Robert Fidati has made three field goals and is second on the team in scoring with 48 points. … Seven players have combined for their 10 interceptions. … Have 32 sacks. •The matchup: Since losing to Selinsgrove 31-10 in the 2009 quarterfinals, CCHS has enjoyed considerable success against District 4 in this same round, beating Clearfield and Shamokin by a combined total of 111-34 the past two years. This one, however, figures to be much more challenging for the Vikings. The Seals will try to grind it out and keep McDermott off the field. Central's task will be to stop the run on first and second downs and force the Seals to the air where they average just over 44 yards per game. On offense, the Vikings will have to be wary of a ball-hawking Selingrove defense that gives a variety of looks and goes after the ball. The Seals thrive on turnovers. The Vikings would love a third consecutive semifinal against Archbishop Wood, but they need to stay focused and mistake-free to continue their improbable run.

Sports Media Weekly No. 127- Jen Royle, Sports Reel Boston

http://sportsmediajournal.com/ Ken Fang of Fang’s Bites and I have recovered from our Thanksgiving hangovers and are raring to go with another version of Sports Media Weekly. We begin the show looking at the college football scene, specifically ESPN’s agreement to televise the college football playoff championships when the series begins in January of 2015. We stay with college football examining the impact Notre Dame’s undefeated season has had for ESPN and NBC in terms of increased ratings and the prospects for ESPN when the Irish play in the BCS National Championship game on January 7th. Ken and I also look back at the success of the NFL on Thanksgiving, with the Redskins/Cowboys match-up being the most-watched television program thus far this fall. We shift to sports radio and the announcement this week that Dana Jabobson, Tiki Barber, and Brandon Tierney have been tapped to host CBS Sports Radio’s morning show when the network launches on January 2nd. We end our news segment by taking a look at the growth of original talk show programming mornings on sports networks. The MLB Network, NFL Network, Golf Channel, and NBC Sports Network have all added morning shows during the past year. Our guest this week is Jen Royle, former sports reporter in New York and Baltimore who has moved back home to Boston. Jen talks about her new website, Sports Reel Boston, which launches at midnight tomorrow night. Jen discusses about how the site will focus primarily on baseball and the Red Sox. She describes how she’s been able to assemble a good roster of talent to write for the site, and how successful she’s been in getting the support she needs to launch this new venture.

All NBA Media is Local

http://sportsmediajournal.com/ We have finally finished the compilation of some of the local media entities which follow the teams in the NBA. Follow the links to see the information for your favorite team: Atlanta Hawks Boston Celtics Brooklyn Nets Charlotte Bobcats Chicago Bulls Cleveland Cavaliers Dallas Mavericks Denver Nuggets Detroit Pistons Golden State Warriors Houston Rockets Indiana Pacers Los Angeles Clippers Los Angeles Lakers Memphis Grizzlies Miami Heat Milwaukee Bucks Minnesota Timberwolves New Orleans Hornets New York Knicks Oklahoma City Thunder Orlando Magic Philadelphia 76ers Phoenix Suns Portland Trail Blazers Sacramento Kings San Antonio Spurs Toronto Raptors Utah Jazz Washington Wizards The resources for each team represent media entities within the immediate metropolitan area for each club. It is by no means a comprehensive list. If you follow other reporters or blogs for your team, add those resources (and links) in the comments for that specific team. This is a great way to crowd source local media doing great work covering their clubs.

Is former Lehigh coach Lembo headed to Purdue?

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER Evidently, a lot of people think it's a good possibility. Pete Lembo, who was the head coach at Lehigh from 2001-2005, is coming off a terrific second season at Ball State. His Cardinals were 9-3 this season and he's 15-9 in two seasons after the program went 6-19 under former coach Stan Parrish. Lembo was evidently asked about the Purdue opening after his team's win over Miami of Ohio last week and according to the Associated Press, his answer was laughter. “This is how I respond to that,” Lembo said as he was laughing when asked about his name being mentioned. I guess I should say that it’s flattering that that’s the case, but I’ve been doing this way too long, and I’m very thankful to be here. I’ve enjoyed this much, much more than I thought I would be sitting here at the end of the second regular season. So that is the furthest thing from anybody’s thought process right now." And then there was this praise from Tom Davis of the News-Sentinel. He wrote: "How good has Lembo been in guiding the Ball State program – on and off of the field? Ask anyone that is close to the Cardinals and they’ll tell you he is better at running the entire operation than former coach (and current Michigan coach) Brady Hoke ever dreamt of being, and Hoke was really good. That’s not a knock on Hoke, Lembo is just that great. This guy is as cerebral as any football coach in the country. The Georgetown graduate studies every minute detail of the program, and immerses himself into it to ensure that its future, not just the here and now, is solidified. Lembo has spread sheets showing where he’ll have gaps on his roster in 2016 and what he’ll need to do now to rectify those holes." There was plenty more praise in that piece. Looking back, many Lehigh fans weren't happy with Lembo despite him going 44-14 and making two playoff appearances in five years. Even though he won his first 11 games as coach in 2001, and went on to win the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award, he received little credit because many said he won games with Kevin Higgins' players. I thought that was unfair. The biggest knock on Lembo at the time was that he wasn't the charismatic Higgins, who had done wonders to revitalize the Lehigh program. Lembo also made the mistake of losing three times in five years to Lafayette after Lehigh had won seven straight in the series. The home loss to the Leopards in 2005 -- the first time since 1989 Lehigh lost to Lafayette at Goodman -- knocked the team out of the playoffs. And, I think Pete, being only 31 at the time he was hired, would admit he was still learning and growing as a coach at that point. He didn't handle a few situations well, like that criticizing question from a longtime alum and program donor at the weekly press luncheon. Pete bristled with a response I am sure he regretted the second it came out of his mouth. It got written about -- not by me -- and he paid a price in PR for it. Soon after this PR snafu, Lehigh changed its policy and no longer had the press and alums together at the weekly press functions. In my five years on the beat with Pete, I felt we had a good relationship and rapport. I never had an issue with him. I didn't cover Lehigh when Higgins was there, so I wasn't making comparisons to how the previous coach operated. With Lembo, you could see someone who was very bright, and very goal-oriented. The one flaw in that era, again, was probably that he didn't handle criticism very well, and because the expectations were so high, he got his share. Trust me, I know it can be hard and sometimes it takes a long time for you to learn to brush it off your back and realize you're not going to please everybody whether you're a sports writer or a college football coach. Perhaps that was the case with Lembo, and my guess is that he handles it much better now than he did at Lehigh. But despite popular opinion that he was run out by Lehigh, that wasn't the case. Lembo, as has been proven since, is a guy who is always looking for the next challenge, the next opportunity and the chance to build something. He was inheriting, not building, at Lehigh. It was only a matter of time before he was off to another challenge and he needed to get to a scholarship program where he could show off his recruiting skills. He knew there were limitations at Lehigh. While he may not have been the most popular guy on campus, he was not kicked to the curb by Lehigh. After leaving Bethlehem, Lembo went 35-22 in five seasons with a previously non-relevant Elon program and now his success at Ball State is generating a lot of attention. It'll be interesting to see what happens next.

TV NEWS ON NOVEMBER 29

http://blog.sitcomsonline.com/2012/11/abc-picks-up-more-episodes-of-last-man.html ABC has picked up five additional episodes each of Friday night comedies Last Man Standing and Malibu Country, giving each series 18 total episodes each for this season. These pick-ups join previously announced orders for new drama Nashville, new comedy The Neighbors, and sophomore drama Scandal. Both comedies Last Man Standing and Malibu Country air Friday nights at 8:00 and 8:30pm ET/PT, respectively, on ABC. Since its season premiere on Nov. 2, ABC sophomore comedy Last Man Standing starring Tim Allen is the top-rated show in Friday's 8:00pm half-hour with Adults 18-49 (2.1/7). Boosting its time period year to year by 76% in Total Viewers and by 91% in Adults 18-49 on average, Last Man Standing premiered with ABC’s biggest numbers in the Friday 8pm half-hour in well over 2-1/2 years – since 1/1/10. Retaining 100% Adult 18-49 lead-in (2.1/7) from Last Man Standing and gaining total viewers, ABC's Malibu Country starring Reba stands as TV's most-watched freshman comedy this season (8.7 million). The new ABC sitcom is No. 1 in the time period across all key Women demographics (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54) and is the broadcast leader with Teens 12-17. Like its lead-in, the sitcom is producing big year-over-year increases for ABC, improving its half-hour by 85% in Total Viewers and by 91% in Adults 18-49 from the same nights last year. Among Adults 18-49, Malibu Country opened as Friday's top-rated scripted series debut on any network in over 5 years -- since October 2007. The comedies premiered late in the fall so a full season is probably not necessary to order, but 18 episodes should be enough to last them the rest of the season. ABC will air seven episodes each through December, so at least 11 episodes will be able to air from Jan-May. ABC has yet to announce its midseason 2013 schedule, so we will give that to you as soon as it is announced. With the additional episodes for Malibu Country, we now know the fate for all of ABC's fall freshman series as 666 Park Avenue and Last Resort are the only ones not moving forward after the initial 13 episodes.

The proposed $70.8 million 2013-14 school budget would raise property taxes by 1.9 percent. It was unveiled Tuesday and is headed to the full school board for review next month. This year’s budget eliminated 10 positions through attrition, including seven teachers and one administrator. The year prior, seven teaching positions were cut, as well as the driver's education program.

Local team is ranked No. 1 in the nation

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER The women's sports programs at Northampton Community College continue to have great success. The women's volleyball team had a record-breaking, championship season this fall; the women's softball team is always strong and now the women's basketball team is ranked No. 1 in the country. Eight of the 12 girls on the roster are from The Morning Call coverage area. They are Alyssa Gibson of Wilson, Katie Schickling and Tanisha Blake of Pocono Mountain West, Jahnna Salazar of Liberty, Brianna Clymer and Sofia Bupivi of Phillipsburg, and Tiara Aziz and Felicia Shaner of Easton. Here's the release courtesy of the school: The Northampton women's basketball team is the new No.1 team in the country according to the NJCAA Division III poll released today by the national office. The Spartans, under the direction of long-time mentor Art Wolfe, took over the top spot after after previous No. 1 Rock Valley Community College (the defending national champion) lost two games over the weekend. Northampton, now 7-0 after Tuesday night's 68-38 victory over Montgomery County Community College, become NCC's first-ever No.1 ranked team. "It is a great accomplishment for Coach Wolfe, his staff and their players," commented Director of Athletics Troy Tucker, "but it is also a huge thrill for our entire department and the college as a whole ... to be ranked #1 shows that your program has earned respect on a national-level, and for that to have happened so quickly here is a testament to our coaches, staff and student-athletes." The women's basketball team had been ranked as high as No. 2 on two different occasions, last week and also back in November of 2010. Men's Basketball, Volleyball, Softball and Baseball have also each held top-10 national rankings.

Yasso schedule once again; and correction on LVC's boys opening night

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER Basketball is around the corner. The season begins a week from Friday night. In case you missed it before here on Groller's Corner, here's the Rothrock/Yasso Christmas City Classic schedule, and remember that ESPN analyst and former Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy is the main speaker at the Tip-Off banquet a week from Thursday at Moravian College's Johnston Hall. At Freedom: Easton vs. Emmaus girls at 2 Easton vs. Emmaus boys at approximately 3:30 Parkland vs. Freedom girls at approximately 5 Parkland vs. Freedom boys at approximately 7 At Liberty: Central Catholic vs. Northampton girls at 2 Central Catholic vs. Northampton boys at approximately 3:30 Liberty vs. Dieruff girls at approximately 5 Liberty vs.Dieruff boys at approximately 7 At Becahi: Allen vs. Nazareth girls at 2 Allen vs. Nazareth boys at approximately 3:30 Whitehall vs. Becahi girls at approximately 5 Whitehall vs. Becahi boys at approximately 7 Also, I was misinformed and then turned around and misinformed everybody in my column the other day in saying that the LVC boys basketball schedule begins on Tuesday, Dec. 17. It actually begins on Friday, Dec. 14. The opening night in the LVC, remembering that the Rothrock/Yasso games do not count in the league standings: Allen at Emmaus Easton at Freedom Nazareth at Parkland Northampton at Whitehall Becahi at Liberty And, I believe that Dieruff is playing CCHS, but I haven't been able to confirm that. It may be dependent on whether or not the Vikings football team makes the state finals. The 3A state title game would be played this same night.

http://www.mcall.com/sports/mc-groller-finetuning-1127-20121127,0,1016352.column FROM THE MORNING CALL Like most people in the media, Jim Wills realizes that he's lucky to get paid to talk about football. He also realizes that a lot of people would love to trade places with him. So, no, Wills will never complain about any assignment. But anybody who thinks TV work is all glamour should have seen the conditions Wills and the rest of the Service Electric TV2 crew had to endure Saturday in televising the Central Catholic-Abington Heights game at Valley View in Lackawanna County. Because of lack of space, Wills and his broadcast partner Bob McCool had to call the game from the top of the press box roof in cold, blustery conditions.

We thought it was going to open in December, but now it looks like it will open just after the holidays. The field turf installation is beginning this week. Pat O'Connell, the Dome's GM, said that registration for leagues in a variety of sports is already underway.

A roundup of Eagles postgame quotes

http://blogs.mcall.com/groller/ FROM KEITH GROLLER It's after 1 on Tuesday morning here in Philadelphia and the quote sheets keep coming: ANDY REID On whether Jeffrey Lurie has assured him that his job is safe for the rest of the season: "We really haven't talked about that. He's been supportive. Obviously he's as competitive as anybody and he wants to win games. That's what he's in this business for. But we really haven't gone there. I'm trying to get this football team to win games, that's what I'm trying to do. That's where my energy is." On Eagles owner Lurie saying before the season that 8-8 would not be good enough: "We're going to keep battling. I'm going to control what I can control and that's getting better as a team. I have to do a better job with that, obviously, by how we've played here. I'm not worried about all of the other things. I'm worried about winning football games and making sure my players know what they're doing, and then going out and executing. I take full responsibility for that. That's sloppy football." DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR TODD BOWLES On things not going the way he expected after being promoted five weeks ago: "It's depressing. It's not about me, it's about the team. We're just trying to win ballgames and for that not to happen and for us to lose as many games as we did on the road, it's inexcusable, it's unacceptable, it's disheartening and I feel like how everyone else feels. It's a tough situation." DEFENSIVE TACKLE CULLEN JENKINS On how he explains seven straight losses: "It's stressing because every possible way that we could lose a game, we've done it." On being angry or being numb to the losses: "I'm so mad right now. Out of all the losses, it feels like I'm more angry right now than any of them. Between all of the bad stuff that has happened, to still have a cahnce, even if it's a far chance, to still have chances, you have to look for any type of positive motivation you can get to keep blOwing them away or whatever. It's frustrating. It's hard to comprehend." LINEBACKER DEMECO RYANS On what the team has left to play for: "I play every day for my pride. It's one thing, you play for pride. That's big for me." Does the team still respond to Andy Reid: "I feel like the guys respond. There's just a lot of misfortune out there. We turn the ball over and not getting turnovers again. Leaving guys open deep is unacceptable. We can't win like that." PLACEKICKER ALEX HENERY On whether his play has been a silver lining in a disappointing season: "This is a team sport, so how the team does is more important than how an individual does. I just do what I can, but we have to get the win. That is what matters." On whether his record of consecutive field goals (19) has sunk in at all: "No, not really. It probably won't. This is not one of those things that I look at. It's a cool honor, but I have to concentrate on the next kick, not the last one." EAGLES NOTEBOOK Eagles Notebook 11/27/12 Brown Delivers ...
