Sports Media Digest- February 23, 2012

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Joins ESPN.com- ESPN has announced that NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has been hired as a columnist for ESPN.com. Abdul-Jabbar will write bi-weekly tapping into his perspectives as a retired professional athlete and as an everyday fan.

“It’s an honor to be associated with a prestigious outfit like ESPN, and I’m looking forward to becoming a regular contributor and adding my voice to the mix,” said Abdul-Jabbar in a press release.

“Besides his experience as an all-time great basketball player, Kareem brings a thoughtful approach to everything he does,” said Rob King, Senior Vice President, ESPN Digital and Print Media. “Fans are certain to be both entertained and enriched by his singular perspective.”

ESPN has Celebrity All-Star Game- ESPN will provide live coverage of the NBAAll-Star Celebrity Game held this week in Orlando. Tip-off is at 7:00p.m. ET tomorrow night aith Mark Jones, Jon Barry and Stuart Scott on the call. Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant and hometown Orlando Magic All-Star Dwight Howrad will serve as team coaches.

CBS Has Five College Hoops Games This Weekend- CBS Sports will have triple header action of college basketball games on Saturday and a double header on Sunday. Saturday at 12:00p.m. ET Vanderbilt will take on #1 Kentucky with Ian Eagle and Jim Spanarkel on the call. Brian Anderson and Dan Bonner will be on the mic for Villanova at #9 Georgetown at 2:00p.m. ET. Verne Lundquist and Clark Kellogg will cap off the day at 4:00p.m. ET as #3 Missouri takes on #4 Kansas. On Sunday at 2:00p.m. ET Pittsburgh will take on # 17 Louisville with Ian Eagle and Bill Raftery. At 4:00p.m. Sunday Tim Brando and Mike Giminski will call #16 Wisconsin at #6 Ohio State.

CBS Sports Network Also Has College Hoops- The CBS Sports Network will also have its share of college basketball this weekend. It all kicks off Saturday at 4:00p.m. ET as Lafayette takes on American. Bob Socci and Vince Curran announce. Roger Twibell and Steve Lappas will call UMass at Dayton at 6:00p.m. ET. The finale on Saturday at 8:00p.m. ET will feature UTEP at UCF. Dave Ryan and Pete Gillen will be on the mic. On Sunday at 12:00p.m. ET Maine will be at Stony Brook. Don Criqui and Wally Szczerbiak will be on hand. Women’s action comes around at 2:00p.m. ET as Jason Knapp and Tammy Blackburn call UMass at Xavier.

MLB Network to Expand its Audio Capabilities During One Pre-Season Game- The MLB Network has announced that up to as many as six players on the Indians and Diamondbacks each will wear live microphones during their pre-season game Wednesday March 7th. The game begins at 3:00p.m. Coaching staff will also wear live microphones throughout the game and live microphones will be positioned at each base, down the first- and third-base lines and along the outfield wall. Matt Vasgersian will provide the call of the game.

Heathcote Next Big Ten Icon- Legendary Michigan State Men’s Basketball Head Coach Jed Heathcote will be profiled in the next edition of the Big Ten Network’s (BTN) Big Ten Icons series. The program, narrated by legendary broadcaster Keith Jackson, will debut on BTN Saturday at 10:30p.m. ET, following the Michigan State-Nebraska men’s basketball game.

Sixth Episode of On Freddie Roach Friday Night- HBO Sports will telecast the sixth episode in the documentary series spotlighting boxing trainer Freddie Roach this Friday night at 9:30p.m. ET. The episode is entitled ‘Counterpuch” and will re-air varius times over the next week.
