Lehigh Valley IronPigs split doubleheader against Rochester

FROM THE EXPRESS TIMES

Josh Barfield knocked in the go-ahead run and Kevin Frandsen added a sacrifice fly as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs beat Rochester, 5-3, in eight innings today, earning a split of the teams’ doubleheader.

The Red Wings won Game 1 at Frontier Field, 3-1, on a two-run walkoff home run by Rene Tosoni off starter Vance Worley (1-1) in the seventh inning.

(Minor league teams play seven-inning games in doubleheaders.)

In the first game, Dustin Martin walked to start the bottom of the seventh and Tosoni took a 1-2 pitch from Worley over the wall.

Lehigh Valley (3-3) had tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the seventh when Erik Kratz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

In the nightcap, with two on and one out in the top of the eighth inning, Barfield singled to center field off reliever Kyle Waldrop, scoring Ronnie Belliard. Dane Sardinha was hit by a pitch, loading the bases and setting up Frandsen’s sac fly. Jeff Larish scored from third, but Barfield was thrown out at home to end the inning.

Mike Zagurski struck out the side in the bottom of the inning for his first save of the season.

Tosoni had appeared to be the hero again, blasting a two-run double into right field as the Red Wings (3-5) led 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth. Rich Thompson spoiled the party -- and the Red Wings' potential sweep today -- hitting a solo home run to right field in the top of the seventh, tying it at 3-all.

Michael Stutes (1-1) earned the win, while Chuck James picked up his first loss of the season.

The Pigs, who managed just three hits in Game 1, stroked nine in Game 2, with two apiece from Brandon Moss (including a solo home run), Thompson, Belliard and Larish.

Wednesday's game was rained out, which resulted in today's doubleheader.

Nate Bump will make his second start this season for Lehigh Valley on Friday as the teams wrap up the three-game series. Bump (0-0, 0.00 ERA) is pitted against lefty Scott Diamond (0-0, 1.80) with first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m.
