PLEASE DON'T GO TO ANY TACO BELL RESTAURANTS RIGHT NOW.
YOU MIGHT GET VERY SICK.
The number of people sickened with E. coli continues to grow this morning. There are now more than 40 confirmed cases of E. coli. Most have been linked to Taco Bell restaurants in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. More than two dozen of those are in Pennsylvania alone. Lehigh, Montgomery, Berks, and Carbon counties all are reporting cases of E.Coli. Officials say the green onions that are suspected to have caused the contamination are believed to have come from a grower in Southern California.
After making the biggest splash at this week’s winter meetings in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. with the trade for starting pitcher Freddy Garcia, the Phillies closed out the meetings with a few more moves.
The Phillies were quite active in Thursday’s Rule V Draft, adding four players. Catchers Adam Donachie and Ryan Budde, and right-handed pitcher Jim Warden were selected during the Major League portion of the draft, while outfielder Victor Hall was picked up in the minor league draft.
Following the draft, the Phillies traded Donachie to the Baltimore Orioles for right-handed pitcher Alfredo Simon. Simon, 25, was selected by Baltimore from the San Francisco Giants organization earlier during the draft, while Donachie was selected from Kansas City.
The Phillies and White Sox dusted off the podium on Day 3 of baseball's Winter Meetings, with Philadelphia emerging with a huge boost to its starting rotation. When the dust completely clears some time between Thursday and Opening Day, the Phillies likely will have a bullpen piece as well -- but that's part two to be announced later.
The first part has the Phillies adding Freddy Garcia from the White Sox for prospects Gavin Floyd and a player to be named after the Rule 5 Draft. That player is Double-A lefty Gio Gonzalez, who arrived in Philadelphia in last year's trade that netted Aaron Rowand for Jim Thome.
A bad cold and a bout of laryngitis couldn't stop general manager Pat Gillick from bolstering the team's starting rotation. His No. 2 man, assistant GM, scouting and player development Mike Arbuckle, announced the deal on Wednesday at 10:30 p.m. ET, roughly two hours after it was completed.Like the Energizer Bunny, Harry Kalas keeps on going and going. The 70-year-old broadcaster has signed a new three-year contract to remain in the Phillies broadcasting booth. Larry Andersen, Chris Wheeler and Scott Franzke are also returning to the Phillies broadcasting team, Rob Brooks, Manager of Broadcasting for the ballclub, announced today. In addition, Brooks announced that former Phillies outfielder, Gary Matthews, is joining the broadcasting team. Scott Graham, who had been with the Phillies since 1991, will not return.
"Harry is the voice of the Phillies and we're delighted he plans on continuing his Hall of Fame career," said Brooks.
"I'm excited to be able to continue calling Phillies games," said Kalas. "I really like the make-up of this club. The future - with Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins - is very bright."
